Elderly couple win £80k fight with travel company after Arctic cruise was diverted because of cold weather Court hears ‘intrepid’ travellers had their imagination ‘fired up’ but were left disappointed after sea ice spoiled trip of a lifetime
An elderly couple have won an £80,000 fight with a travel company after their Arctic cruise was diverted because of cold weather, a court heard.
Nicholas Sherman, 76, and wife Rosemary, 75, who spent recent years travelling to countries including Antarctica, Canada, Singapore, New Zealand, South Africa and India, booked a “trip of a lifetime” in 2018 to sail around the Arctic.
The cruise, called “Northwest Passage – in the Wake of the Great Explorers”, was set to travel through the waters of Arctic Canada on a similar route that Captain Sir John Franklin’s doomed 19th-century Erebus voyage took.
But their September 2018 trip was ruined by sea ice created by colder than usual weather and, in a change to the itinerary, their ship instead spent most of its time around Greenland, with some time at the Passage’s Baffin Island.
